Eadie Newman Interview #37
Could you introduce yourself?
My name is Eadie Newman, I am an emerging artist from Canberra, Australia. I mainly draw, I also make zines and sculptures, amongst other things.
Why art, what started it all?
There are many reasons. I liked making and imagining. I like art as a creative way to channel boredom and frustration, but also as a method of reflection and exploration of feeling. I like art as communication and expression of ideas that are less easily spoken of.
What motivates you when you sit down to create something?
I am motivated by the desire to keep building up work, and ideas, the sense of satisfaction when I’ve made something, the need to express something in particular, and wanting to have something to show for myself. I feel live I’m often motivated by restlessness and frustration.
How would you describe your style?
Expressive, sensitive. Elements of humour, naïveté, obsessiveness. Relies a lot on imagery of the human body.
Do you have a favorite gallery/space that you’ve shown in?
I was recently in a group show at the Nishi Gallery in New Acton, which is a very nice space. Last year I had a show with Merryn Sommerville at CCAS Mankua, which was also a good space.
Recognition or just personal expression?
Recognition of personal expression always. Doesn’t have to be on a huge scale, but I think most people want to be understood or liked by someone.
What are your favorite colors to work with?
I like pinks n browns, but also all colours.
Is there a certain place where you feel most creative?
Anywhere by decision. But I like to be alone and generally in bed when I make work.
Do you plan on exploring zine making in the future?
Yes. I went to my first zines fair and made my first zines in 2011. Since then I’ve participated in a few local zines fairs and made quite a few zines. Mostly of art and comics. Its pretty fun.
What makes you happy?
Being warm n eating nice food. Spending time with nice people. Making art. Music, kittens, being appreciated, learning stuff. A good nights sleep. All the boring things.
